TIPS
6 essential tips for
learning Turkish

Tip 1 – Immerse yourself in Turkish every day

Tip 2 – Learn the basics consistently, not intensely
Tip: Opt for short, regular sessions rather than long, infrequent ones.
Why?
The human brain assimilates a foreign language better through spaced repetition. Learning for 15 to 30 minutes a day is more effective than studying for 3 hours once a week. In Turkish, this will help you better memorize grammatical structures such as vowel harmony and suffixes, which are very different from English.
Teaching tip: Create a daily routine: for example, listen to a Turkish podcast while you eat breakfast or review five new words every evening with flashcards.

Tip 3 – Focus on key grammatical structures
Tip: Start by learning the basic structures of Turkish, such as word order and present tense conjugation.
Why?
Turkish has an agglutinative grammatical structure: words are formed by adding suffixes. For example, the verb “to come” (gelmek) can become “geleceğim” (I will come). Word order is often Subject – Object – Verb.
Learning tip: Don’t try to learn everything at once. Focus on useful structures such as:
“Ben …” (I …)
“Sen … misin?” (Are you …?)
“O … değil” (He/she is not …)

Tip 4 – Master the Turkish alphabet from the start
Tip: Learn how to pronounce each Turkish letter correctly, even if some of them resemble the Latin alphabet.
Why?
The Turkish alphabet has the advantage of being phonetic: each letter is always pronounced the same way. But be careful: some letters do not exist in English or are pronounced very differently (for example, “ı” without a dot or “ç,” “ş”).
Learning tip: Record yourself reading simple words aloud (e.g., “kitap,” “arkadaş”) and compare with the pronunciation of a native speaker. This practice will help you develop phonological awareness, which is essential for speaking and understanding well.

Tip 5 – Dare to speak, even if you make mistakes
Tip: Start speaking as soon as possible, even if you don’t know everything yet.
Why?
Many learners wait until they can “speak perfectly” before expressing themselves… but perfection never comes if you don’t practice. Turkish is a living language, and practicing it activates several areas of the brain that are essential for learning.
Teaching tip: Participate in language exchanges with native speakers, join a community of learners, or use a tutor. You can also talk to yourself in Turkish: describe what you are doing, ask simple questions, and rephrase your thoughts.

Tip 6 – Keep a Turkish learning journal
Tip: Regularly write down what you learn, your mistakes, your questions, and your progress.
Why?
Keeping a logbook helps you structure your learning, memorize content better, and, above all, become aware of your progress. It is a powerful educational tool for moving from passive learning (I read, I listen) to active learning (I formulate, I rephrase, I correct).
In addition, it promotes metacognitive thinking: you learn how to learn, which is essential in a language as different from English as Turkish.
Educational tip: Write down new words or expressions you encounter in context (e.g., “yavaş yavaş = little by little—heard in a TV series”).
Write your own sentences using the structures you have learned.
Do a mini-review each week: “This week, I learned the days of the week + the verb ‘to have’ in the present tense.”
Include pages for “frequent mistakes”: this will prevent you from repeating them and help you better understand the pitfalls of the language.
